I love that occasional song that paints such a picture in one’s mind that they can almost live the moment.

“Powderfinger” is one of those songs for me. I can remember being 18 and registering for the draft. It was during the Iran Hostage Crisis, and I can remember thinking, “man, I could end up in Iran fighting over this.” It didn’t happen, but the emotions of the protagonist in the song I can deeply relate to.

Then, just when you think Neil Young’s just written another protest song, he ends this rocker with some of the most poignant lines of love poetry you’ll find anywhere:

Think of me
as one you’d never figured
Would fade away so young
With so much left undone
Remember me to my love,
I know I’ll miss her.

Here’s “Powderfinger.”
